In the Company of the Courtesanを結構気に入ったのでこの本も買ってみたのですが、裕福な布商人の末娘の生涯の話です。当時に生きる娘としては非常に珍しく学に長け、皮肉さを交えつつ語るアレッサンドラの目を通じて、華々しい都から一転、僧侶サヴォナローラのもと色をなくしていくフィレンツェの不安などを感じることができます。
　単なるロマンスや歴史ものではなく、当時のフィレンツェでの現実味あふれる人生を生きることができます。美術、歴史、宗教、結婚、恋愛、生を絡ませて織り上げた傑作です。ぐっと引き込まれて我を忘れて読む、といった感じではありませんでしたが、はっと気づくといつのまにか読み進んで終わってしまっている、というのがDunantの本の静かな魅力だと思います。

言い回しは昔の丁寧な感じにしてあり、英語のレベルも比較的高く、軽く読む、というより家でリラックスしてじっくり読む、といった感じに向いていると思います。

The author describes the women's life during the decline of Medici Florence. You'll be shocked by the fact that at that time, men dominate everything and women were not allowed to go outside freely, have a hobby freely and love men freely. And this novel's heroine who is fifteen-year-old merchant's daughter with a Renaissance education and a yearning to paint, managed to get freedom to go outside and paint at the cost of loving men... This story is based on the historical fact such as a fundamentalist monk Savonarola who later excommunicated by the Pope seizing the power of Florence, which gives you a better knowledge of that era. Some erotic scenes are intertwined, I think this novel deserves a 6-star rate and I strongly recommend this especially for women who love western history.
